Before Bungie started work on creating a game based on the planet-glassing excitement that is the fall of Reach , discussions at the studio momentarily went in the direction of a Master Chief resurrection tale — a direct continuation of the Halo trilogy’s story as “Halo 4.” Bungie community man Brian Jarrard told the MTV Multiplayer blog as much in a recent interview, saying, “Even before the idea to build a game based around Reach came about, a lot of other concepts were explored, up to and including a proper ‘Halo 4,’ where Master Chief was going to wake up from cryo-sleep and we were going to tell that story.” So he is in cryo-sleep and not dead?! … Ahem, please excuse us.

No co-op for Call of Duty: Black Ops’ campaign

Though Call of Duty: Black Ops ‘ Cold War setting is a new feature for the series, one element of the game will stay true to the franchise’s norms: the game’s campaign will only be a single-player experience. Speaking to MTV , Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia explained, “single-player is the epic, cinematic, seat-of-your-pants thrill ride that you star in,” while the game’s cooperative offerings will be packaged in completely separate “unique co-op modes.” Sounds fairly reminiscent of Modern Warfare 2 ’s Spec Ops missions, though Lamia quickly clarified that Black Ops ‘ co-op mode will be “different” from that of the last game in the series.

Sega cites ‘tweaks’ and release position for Alpha Protocol delay [update]

It would have been nice to hear more of an explanation way back in October when Sega’s Alpha Protocol was ” officially delayed ” to the amorphous “Spring 2010,” but, unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Speaking with MTV Multiplayer this week, though, assistant producer at Sega Matthew Hickman explicitly detailed the reasons for the delay, saying, “We really wanted to polish the game up, make it everything Obsidian planned it to be, and give the consumer a very polished game.” He added that there’s been some “tweaks in lighting here and there,” and the inventory screen has been revamped a bit, but in general the team has been focused on “bringing the whole quality level up.” The post’s author also notes that the game is set for a “Summer 2010″ release window now, and we’ve reached out to him (and Sega) for clarification.

[ NFL ] If you want to play a bunch of songs by The Who in Rock Band in a manner that satisfies your minute attention span, and do so soon , MTV and Harmonix just made an announcement that will delight you (however briefly). Alternately, you’re going to be thrilled if you want to capture some Super Bowl magic in your living room. On Sunday, February 7, The Who will play a 15-song medley during the Super Bowl’s halftime show, and Rock Band will feature that same medley as a $2 download the same day (on Xbox 360 and Wii, anyway — the PS3 version will arrive later).

When celebrities get on board for a game, the inevitable pitfall is the dreaded interview where said celebrity awkwardly tries relating to the “gamer” crowd (trust us, we know all about it .) With DJ Hero dropping this week, celebrity sponsor Jay-Z sat down with MTV News to talk about how much of a gamer he is (hint: not so much) and his support for the cultural awareness opportunities inherent in the recently released turntable title. “Immediately, of course, with the success of Guitar Hero , you know, [DJ Hero] piqued my interest, and then on top of that it was something from the hip-hop culture. So, anytime you can, you know, I can expand the genre and introduce it to new audiences and widen it — you know, the reach of what hip-hop can do — you know, I’m interested in that,” Jay-Z explains in the video interview (embedded after the break)

Eliza Dushku interested in live-action Wet

While the idea of getting wet at the movies doesn’t sound all that great (wet clothes and air conditioning don’t mix, people!), the prospect of a Wet movie is certainly something we can get behind. That’s just what voice of Rubi Malone Eliza Dushku proposed during an interview with MTV , stating that the game “maybe could turn into a live-action Dushku vehicle.” Of course, it’s best to keep in mind that there aren’t any actual plans yet; Dushku isn’t confirming things are in motion to make a live-action Wet film a reality, rather she wouldn’t mind playing Rubi Malone in the film if it ever happens. We wouldn’t mind it, either — it’d give her a chance to make up for her underwhelming performance in the game

Warner Bros. today announced the inclusion of David Bowie as a second playable character in upcoming music/rhythm game, Lego Rock Band , and also handed over a mess of new media seen above and below. Coupled with last month’s Iggy Pop announcement , the game’s playable-musician-who-probably-shouldn’t-be-in-a kids-game quotient has officially been doubled
